Hi everybody, Ronald Heifetz once said, "the single biggest failure of leadership is to treat adaptive challenges like technical problems." Are you aware of any research that investigated the adverse impact of such a misconception for digital transformation, particularly in an knowledge / engineering heavy company culture?
Any literature? Your feedback is highly appreciated. Best regards, Michael

Answer
Digital Transformation: Evolution or Revolution?
Consider “digital transformation.” Skeptics say the process is more like an evolution than a transformation. It is a journey and should be treated like one, because once you get “this” done, there is more to do. More innovations happen, more technologies that can solve problems are introduced, and there’s always more to do.
So, is “digital transformation” an evolution or is it truly transformative? It’s actually both. Digital technologies had to evolve to get from where they were to where they are now. On the other hand, when appropriately applied, those same technologies are transforming companies for the better. A smooth digital transformation journey relies on data in digital form, processes that are digitally managed, and the right data at the right time...

I have extended the UTAUT2 model and I have already developed my model hypotheses. I read about various methods/techniques used such as (Factor Analysis, Partial Least Square (PLS), Structure Equation Model (SEM), Regression Analysis) and tools such as (SPSS, Smart-PLS, Mplus, R, PLS-graph, AMOS). But I am not sure which one to use.

Hi all,
I am currently writing my master thesis about the knowledge/competence gap between an IT outsourcer and his client. By this I mean the difference of the IT knowledge and the impact that an IT outsourcing contract has on this. It was quite difficult for me to find sources on this. But luckily, with some help, I managed to find some. I'm also performing a case study on a bank and the collaboration of its IT department and their IT outsourcer. I was wondering if someone has more sources on this topic and perhaps a source in which its mentioned how to measure this?
All the help is welcome!

I am working on a project on how to create more innovation in a big hierarchical and bureaucratic organisation. The innovation requires cooperation across the departments in the organisation and cannot be done locally.
Are there any research articles that consider this issue?
I read stories about how big organisations start small external companies to do the innovation. Is there any research that documents the benefits of this approach?
I also consider the matrix organisation structure to increase the innovation. Is there any research on the outcome to this approach?
Any help will be appreciated.
Relevant answer
Answer
Yes, I truly believe that innovation is possible in large organisations. I do not know much about private commercial organisations, for whom their ability to survive and thrive might be very dependent on innovation ahead of their competition. However, I do know that in public service organisations (such as the NHS in England) that innovation is possible. Just like any organisation, it is important that the environment promotes and enables innovative thinking. There's plenty of evidence of innovation in the health sector too, so it's a reasonable thing to argue.
Hope this helps. Good luck with your work.

As more companies in the built environment adopt information management system (ISO 19650) to better manage their projects, questions are arising on how much these systems should cost them.
The general pricing model for these platforms are either user based licensing or module based licensing, which pricing model should a client embrace ?
Relevant answer
Answer
It depends on the product and the way the product is used by the organization. What I'm seeing lately is that the vendors are more willing to work with their clients to determine the right balance of license types. It's not just per seat or per core any longer. Some vendors base licenses on revenue or have a "basket" of licenses that anyone can use (we used to call this concurrent licensing).
Bottom line, there is no single answer to this question. It should be determined by analysis and should be able to change after the first year's usage have either confirmed the initial usage assumptions or called them into question.

  • what is the effect of ( "non-technical, or “soft factors”, such as culture, needs of individuals, habits and emotions)on methodology acceptance by individual?
  • I would be grateful if you could suggest and introduce me more resources on soft factors and the effect of them on methodology acceptance.
  • And if we want to focus on " soft factors and individual acceptance" thorough methodology we should utilize "People-oriented methodology" like ETHICS?
Relevant answer
Answer
Acceptance from individuals is not taking into consideration soft factors generally as IS as a topic encompass an audience of IT individuals who carry with them logical traits and do not leave much space to persuasion or ambiguity. However, in my experience, I have noticed that those people appreciate social experiments and if the methodology is human-centric you will have a better chance to be accepted. They are not necessarily monetary driven and you will require a value exchange that they need. Try to exchange new knowledge and breakthroughs instead of simple cooperation, find values that can be shared in order to achieve true collaboration. Confucius once said that knowing what you know and knowing what you do not know is real knowledge. Find that breakeven and start your exchange.

Dear Participant,
I am currently pursuing my MSc. in Information Systems Management from the University of Liverpool. As part of my dissertation research, I would like to help us discover the market’s sentimental mood from micro-blogging posts through identified text clustering and lexical analysis algorithms.
To begin the survey;
  1. You will access the following page http://sema.mdosigroup.com
  2. Login using either your Facebook or Twitter account to access social media content.
  3. Go to the following link http://sema.mdosigroup.com/SEMA which will give you further instructions to proceed.
What you’ll experience will be a simulation of the identified algorithms at work which automatically mark text comments as very negative, negative, neutral, positive and very positive. Your participation in the remaining part of the survey will help us establish how these algorithms can further be used to improve market research in terms of effectively analyzing the market's response to corporate social media posts.
All information collected as part of this research will strictly be treated in confidentiality with individual firms or people not identified.
Thank you for your consideration, your feedback is important.
Yours Sincerely,
Wendy Oludhe

Hidden costs associated the organization of work
Relevant answer
Answer
Hi Ana Maria,
If I understand and interprete your question correctly than you are looking for factors that influence the cost of compliance (behavior). Kenneth Merchant (1998)  identifies some factors i.e. elements of variabels (if you like) that constitutes the direct and indirect control system costs. Indirect control system costs are hidden and can be categorized along the nature of the costs. Examples are operational delays due to segregation of duty controls, negative attitudes due to action controls, negative attitudes due to result controls, gamesmanship and datamanipuliation et cetera. These type of costs are hard to control.
Kind regards

We know since time of Norbert WIENER (1968) a Kybernetician of 1st generation that the term Information is not yet defined in a unified way. Do we need a separated new definition of that term? Or do we need an axiomatic definition of a linquistically and philosophically legacy defined term? That means: Can we use a common definition as real-scientifically basis for a nature-scientific axiom?
Scientist of Physics like to use the mathematically Information Theory of SHANNON, but is it enough to define this so important term in present science?
Relevant answer
Answer
Thank you Franz. I would settle for advancing something that could be built upon. The question is: How does the information inherent in a relationship, for example, the relationship that exists between two centers of gravity, relate to the force.
The information for this relationship is like a blueprint of sorts, it must be "stored" in some way to be available, perhaps in the relationship itself. Yet it is not material.  It is an idealization. Yet, physics works with idealizations, for example, with "point particles."
I have mathematics for the formation of bosonic energy near a gravitational center that might be correct. Or maybe not. Either way, what I still lack is a way to model how non-material information inherent in relationship forms or informs physicality.
I don't think this is only a philosophical question. I believe the answer will be needed for the next phase of physics. My paper doesn't really need this for completion, but it would be nice to have an answer for this seemingly unanswerable question.
Its amazing how many unanswerable questions in science have been answered by hard-headed people. I'm happy the see that there are others who wonder about such things!

There is a paradoxal situation in the modern world: although there is an overabundance of available information, it is often difficult to obtain relevant information when it is needed. The most common and generic term for this phenomena is information overload, which occurs when information receive becomes a hindrance rather than a help when the information is potentially useful. What are the best tools offered by analytics solution providers to help overcome the problem of information overload?
Relevant answer

Very interesting question. This problem does exist  since stone age. We humans are simply so intelligent that we are caught up with either information overload, noise and/or inaccurate / irrelevant information. we perhaps need to learn from birds, beasts and even insects!!!

In identity and access management an identity can request access to an information asset. This apparently simple premise immediately leads to staggering complexity.
1. If you own the asset then access can be granted and managed directly.
2. If you own the asset, but none of its access paths, you must negotiate a  protocol with path owners, if you are to provide access.
3. Any (contractual) entitlement to access introduces entitlement and contract management.
Following this approach we have identified 3 types of access (one direct sample and 2 indirect examples).
How many classes of access management could be discerned in a formal manner? Does anybody know of such an approach?
Thank you.
Relevant answer
Answer
I believe you need to start with the rich area of access control models: they already define assets, access rights, owners, etc. and this has been a very active area of research. (There is always adaptation of the model which is needed to your exact systems and security and privacy concerns, but these models are the starting point to understand access).

I think a FB survey can be reported similarly to other SNS investigations.  There is an e-book 'Otto, A. (2011). Does Facebook make you happy?', and he used similar ways to report response rates, sampling etc.
"Sample
The sample employed for this research project consists of international young adults using Facebook. We focused on young adults (18 - 29), because they seem to be the main users of Facebook. 291 participants started the main part of the survey, but only 207 participants completed it. Of the 207 participants, 84 completed both the main survey and the follow-up survey. The respondents mean age is 24.19 (SD = 2.38) with 72 males (34.8%) and 135 females (65.2%). 55.6 per cent (115) of the participants answered “studying” to the question of their main current occupation, 48.6 per cent (80) “working” and 5.8 per cent (12) were unemployed at the moment participating the survey. The nationality of the respondents shows a high variety, with the largest group coming from Europe (82.1%)."
I think that as long as you can describe the usual details of who the survey was distributed to, what criteria were used for inclusion, how many responded etc, then it should be quite straight forward. If the data is not available to use the same statistical analysis you have used in the other methods, then opt for a simple descriptive approach.

How can we differentiate between horizontal and vertical enterprise?
Relevant answer
Answer
Horizontal and vertical can also describe how a business is structured internally, and how communication flows.
In Horizontal organization, offices at equal levels on the organizational chart can talk to each other and the communication is "flattened."
Vertical organization is hierarchical and communication must go up the organizational hierarchy and down by another path to reach another office at the same level of the organizational chart.

We need thorough knowledge of domains to create applications, products, services and platforms to serve customers and end users. Domains are vast reservoir of knowledge. Mastering this knowledge is no easy task. Given that there are multitudes of domains this task becomes humongous. This task can be made easier if we unearth a set of archetypes that can capture major portion (100% does not seem plausible) of knowledge across domains. We, of course, need to contextualize these archetypes.

Answer
You make a good point about the need for speed (which would suggest that intuition would be the way to go). However, while intuition is useful for making quick decisions, it is not so useful for making successful one. Also, you make a point about the information being in a particular context. I've found is that the most useful knowledge is self-contextualized. For example, with Ohm's law, changes in volts, amps and ohms are understood in relation to each other. The application then becomes obvious - one uses the self-contextual knowledge only in those cases where the concepts relate to the situation (one having amps, volts, and ohms).

the reliability services has the same meaning with connection oriented services in network connection or not????
Relevant answer
Answer
Sarah -
Are you asking if reliability has the same definition, whether applied to a wireless network or a hardwired system? If your question is about jargon in a particular field, I don't know, and even "reliability" might be defined differently in different disciplines/subject matter fields. However, if you are comparing reliability for two kinds of systems, I would define them the same way. For example, if the reliability of a "connection oriented" system is measured by its mean time to failure, you would want to measure the reliability of a "connectionless" system by its mean time to failure also - and I'd also want to know their standard errors. If you want to measure reliability by probability of a successful operation, and you had subsystems in series, then the overall probability of success is the product of those subsystem probabilities. That would apply to both the connection oriented case and the connectionless case, even though they have different subsystems and even different numbers of subsystems.

ABSTRACT This article proposes a framework to create effective transitional leadership in the defence and aerospace industry. The proposed framework identifies and maps traits and skills of military personnel in a manner that can be tested and validated in accordance with principles of human resource management. Applying this framework would assist hiring managers in their selection of program or project managers from the military in transition to a defence contractor support organisation. Employing a research approach embracing a mix of both qualitative and quantitative strategies, the study examined more than 50 respondents to a 34-question survey, focusing on 14 respondents who submitted fully completed surveys. The conceptual framework for this study is derived from investigations conducted by project management practitioners and scholars who have built upon the research of previous research, which studied project development models within various industries.

Does ICT really contribute to strategy in organisations or is it just hype ? Is it the fate of ICT to end up like any other necessary operational service like cleaning, security, utilities etc?
Relevant answer
Answer
Your questions sounds like that suggested by Nicholas Carr in his infamous article "IT Doesn't Matter" from HBR. Carr argued that IT is infrastructure technology like electricity in which competitive advantage disappears once everyone has it. This article has been decisively refute by John Seeley Brown. He argues in response to Carr that IT doesn't provide strategic value by itself, but rather achieves value in the way that it is implemented in the organization. Only when the organization has the managerial skills to recognize and integrate IT into the organization does it achieve any kind of strategic advantage. Additionally, IT is different from the other infrastructural technologies because it has been undergoing continuous change and has migrated through several different platforms. Through the wonders of Moore's Law we will see this evolution continue for some time.
I've include Brown's response to Carr's article in my post.

These could be any infrastructure projects (roads, water supply, sanitation, ports, irrigation, etc), but I'm mostly interested in roads. I prefer agencies that mostly contract the work out, but those that do the work directly are acceptable.
Relevant answer
Answer
There are various types of infrastructure, information and ways of storing the information. A key data component of all infrastructure is its spatial location.
Consultants working on a design review of a metro project in Vietnam are using a task and information (~ documents) management system called DrawMGT. The government agency responsible for the project with take over the information system when the project has been completed.
In Bangladesh the Local Government Engineering Department is using GIS as a basis for planning and managing rural roads (see the document "Planning Guidelines for Rural Road Master Plan" from the LGED's GIS unit)
New Zealand apparently has a Location Referencing Management System which includes an Exor Spatial Data Manager. It is run by the New Zealand Transit Agency.
Germany must have several GIS-based road network information applications. The road and transport research society FGSV will hold ist next related conference, called Strassen-Geo-Kongress 2013, in March of next year.
The German company Logiball has worked on a GIS system for forest roads, working with the Kuratorium für Waldarbeit und Forsttechnik e.V. - but I am not sure what data has been included or related to the GIS.

I wish to discuss how MIS assist the fields of Computer suported collaborative environments.
Relevant answer
Answer
Management Information System (MIS) arose from the key element of assisting management of an organisation or enterprise in capturing, processing, storage and retireval of relevant, up-to-date and demand driven data and information for management functions including follow up on the daily actitvities of the entity. This became absolutely necessary with the introduction of computers or with the development of a computer supported working environment. Since most functions and activities of an organisation are carried out or assisted with the increasing use and application of computers in either a standalone, local or wide area network with several layers of staff in any enterprise, there is increasing need to capture, process and retrieve data/information to the different layers of management to allow them carry out decisions and other related management functions, thus the term MIS. Now since the environment is collaborative ie 'shared' for example in the field of education where there are managers, policy makers, teachers, and students, this certainly demands the exchange and sharing of vital information amongst the many players in either the execution of duties, policy direction and further to furnish data and information to guide in decision making and to yield valuable statistics on eg studend enrolment, course schedules, admissions, examinations, recruitment, promotions and provision of exam results. This calls for the collaborative envrionment and the creation of either a local, wide or virtual information/electronic network to facilitate the creation of joint databases, platforms and hubs of data/information that could easily feed and serve all the people involved in the field of education. This would certainly have several querries/search engines for the relevant information from all the stakeholders. MIS has over the years increasingly grown to include almost all the functions/areas of management of an enterprise in all fields of knowledge and practice. Therefore MIS efficiently and effectively works in a computer assisted environmnent unlike those days when paper records were the mode of communication and storage of data/information. Records management in the olden days used paper based storage and processing facilities that had a lot of disadvantages including huge volumes of data/lack of storage space and difficulty in retrieval of relevant information. Thus the advent of the computer facilitated the use of electronic information processing/management that eventually led to the development of MIS in today's modern management portfolios. Collobration amongst all stakeholders has been greatly augmented with the increasing use, application and promotion of computer-based environments where speed, accuracy, retrieval and computational aspects of information processing have benefited. Therfore the use of MIS in the field of education cannot be overemphasised since this applies to almost all the fields of knowledge and practice the world over.
