Advise and Dissent: Memoirs of an Ex-Senator Paperback – September 1, 2013
Purchase options and add-ons
Advise and Dissent is the personal odyssey of James Abourezk, from his coming of age as the son of Lebanese immigrants in South Dakota, through his hardscrabble days as a farmhand, bartender, bouncer, and cook, to his entrance into and voluntary exit from the U.S. Senate. His is a quintessentially American story that entertains as it challenges the thinking of our nation.
Abourezk refused to compromise his beliefs. He championed Native American self-determination and demanded the creation of a Palestinian state. He challenged the flow of special interest money through political action committees and tried to overthrow the structure that keeps small farmers in an economic stranglehold. His memoir takes the reader on a remarkable and wise tour through the corridors of power. At a time of waning public confidence in government, he makes us realize the importance of participatory democracy.

Editorial Reviews
Review
“Few politicians have written an autobiography as earthy, poignant, witty, and forthright as has James Abourezk. His journey from the Indian country of South Dakota to the U.S. Senate and his struggle on behalf of the victimized, defrauded, and oppressed extend the grand populist-progressive tradition of bygone decades. Travel with Abourezk and see what happens when an irrepressible conscience interacts with the gritty world of politics and its avaricious practitioners in business and government.”—Ralph Nader
"Advise and Dissent is an important book. . . . It is an object lesson for politicians of both today and tomorrow, who believe--wrongly--that they must sell off their principles in order to be elected. Abourezk shows them how to stand for something, to be both principled and elected."--Gore Vidal
"The annals of the U.S. Senate are replete with accounts of political mavericks, and Abourezk helped lead the charge in the 1970s against the Washington establishment, the status quo, and politics as usual. . . . His brand of populist politics infuriated many, pleased others, and should be read by all, for often truth is stranger than fiction."--Library Journal
"Advise and Dissent is the inspiring success story of a Lebanese immigrant's son who went from modest circumstances to the heights of the United States Senate. Even more, it is an inspiring example of one who, repeatedly, put principle before politics, and even relinquished his seat in that great body as a matter of principle. . . . He describes his public pursuit of a private dream with so many wry and witty tales that readers will find it impossible to put this book down before it is finished, or out of mind for long after that."--Andrew I. Killgore, Washington Report on Middle East Affairs
"Not a chapter of his book is less than enthralling. His commitment to the rights of the underdog and against the machinations of monied special interest (e.g., the oil industry and PACs, which he believes should be broken up and scrapped, respectively) blazes from every page. Particularly noteworthy is Abourezk's long, indignant exposure of the perfidies of the pro-Israel lobby, which he has sought to counter by founding and working pro bono for the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee. Political apologia of the first order."--Booklist

- Reviewed in the United States on August 13, 2024Jim Abourezk was a family friend in South Dakota. He served with intelligence and integrity in the Senate and throughout his career. Much to be learned about personal integrity and growing up in South Dakota in the 1960s until now.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 24, 2019The book is extremely well written, entertaining, funny, personal saga of one of the U.S. Senate's great mavericks. Anyone with any interest in politics should buy this book. It's one of the best books I have ever read.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 22, 2020Excellent memoirs! Fun and interesting reading
- Reviewed in the United States on January 7, 2014Jim Abourezk grew up locally(within 50 mi) and my husband, who is a history buff, recognized many of the people and places that he writes about.
Am sure that he will review it in his local newspaper column, so others will want to read it, also!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 22, 2014A wonderful book, full of history, not only giving out true information on Lebanon and other Middle East countries, but showing a precise history of the American Indians, especially the Sioux, and the treatment received by them from the U.S. government. Abourezk has always fought valiantly and brilliantly during his career as a lawyer and later, as a politician, strongly for the little man--the minorities in this country, such as Indians and people in the M.E.
The only negative is that this book should be more updated, such as writing of people now gone, and important changes in history since Abourezk's time in Washington as a Senator. But the book shows clearly events during the 1970s and the 1980s. Moreover, the negative brings the reader forward to clarify the following:
The positive side of this book is that not only can you well see into that time period, you can also get a true picture in great detail of how our government was run with a strong pro-Israeli bias, money coming in from both parties to sanitize the truth of Israel's disobedience to international laws regarding human treatment for the Palestinians. Israel's attacks upon Lebanon, especially in 1982, were covered splendidly, also Reagan's Olive North which opens many details. On page 172-3 it is interesting to see that Israel forbade news photographers to enter Lebanon in 1982, so Abourezk cleverly arranged another entrance to the area from Cyprus so that an excellent film portraying this horrible destruction could be created. But regular news channels would not accept the film, so he had to locate other avenues to present this documentary. A clear history of Lebanon is given on Pp. 194-197.
Visits to Russia and China bring the reader to new, innovative and challenging insights. Also the author's visits with Castro in Cuba and a telling story about the Shah of Iran who was in cahoots with the U.S., not known by the average American. After reading this book, more can be gleaned, good and bad, about those in Washington.
Senators and most politicians then (also presently) in order to keep their positions, had to pay obeisance to the status quo which quieted down anti-Zionist pleas such as Abourezk's. These politicians favored the rich, giving little or no preference for anything other than "special interests." See Pp. 106 and 113. Many tricks were played against a multitude of protestations. Abourezk tried to break up the greedy oil companies. As one can see today, we are pitted with far higher oil prices. See P. 122.
Abourezk wasn't forced out of the senate but knew there would be better opportunities in other areas, so he left. Unlike Abourezk, Pau Findley, author of "They Dared to Speak," in office in the Congress for 22 years, was out-voted deliberately because of his outpouring of anti-Israeli protestations. Even now, many Americans don't have a clue about M.E. news; further, it would seem that they don't care. It strikes one as amazing that so many individuals and groups have shown a valuable argument against the strong-arming PAC's like the powerful AIPAC among many others, but enjoyed only small, temporary and sometimes inconsequential victories.
On Pages 176-8 we see details of the first Jewish terrorists to start trouble for the Palestinians. These terrorists were called the Stern Gang and Yitzak Shamir was one of their leaders. On Page 179, after witnessing the miserable conditions of the Palestinian refugees, Abourezk says:
"I left Lebanon feeling immensely betrayed. For most of my adult life I had believed that Israel had been picked on by the Arab countries. And, like most Americans, I clung to the image of Israel created by "Exodus" by author Leon Uris, and his film, which glorified Israel's naked land grab."
In Chapter 10, "The Crazy Horse Café," Abourezk offers us a concise history of our government's brutality toward the American Indian or Native American, including General Custer in the 1800s, the destruction of the Sioux nation, also the Hopi's, the Navajo's and other tribes. Wounded Knee and the BIA (Bureau of Indian Affairs). It is a treacherous history of injustice indeed, well worth reading.
I 1974 Abourezk set up a new organization in order to fight anti-Arab racism. Its name is the American Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee, or ADC. Since then, it has done very well disputing the wrongs committed against Arabs, Muslims and Arab Americans. It is a strong organization with lawyers who fight the stereotypes we see on television and read in our news organs.
In summation, I believe this is an important to read. I found it to openly expose some of the degradation of Arabs due to the direction our country has taken causing much harm to our planet, such as highly expensive wars in many parts of the M.E. I just couldn't put it down.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 15, 2014Getting expelled from school at 16 for tying a teacher to a radiator--and then being thrown out by his parents--seems an improbable start on the road to the U.S. Senate, meetings with Fidel Castro and Yasir Arafat, and behind-the-scenes negotiations to free American hostages in Iran. Most men who have held positions of power make their memoirs into a Preening Party filled exclusively with moments of personal glory. "Advise & Dissent" is true but novel-like in character development, tracing Jim Abourezk's life from early, crude intolerance and bar room conflict, to championing Indian rights and proclaiming populist and liberal causes that both frustrated and confounded "triangulating" Senate colleagues. Cynics who believe it is impossible for a politician to speak his mind and cold-shoulder special interests have a treat in store for them.
