By August, the Mister Softee truck becomes a figure of menace. It rolls through your dreams, down the roads and across the skies of summer, each afternoon keyed to its torturous jingle.

The invention of ice cream of course necessitated the ice-cream truck. Once people had the good stuff they wanted it everywhere—on demand.
