On the Release of Mahmoud Khalil

Today, after spending more than 100 days in illegal detention over 1400 miles from his wife and newborn son, Mahmoud Khalil is set to be freed, as a federal judge in New Jersey has ordered his immediate release. Mahmoud, a Palestinian-American who graduated from a master’s program at Columbia University while in detention, is a US permanent resident and was arrested solely for speaking out against the ongoing genocide in Palestine. As we wrote in our March statement about Mahmoud, his detention is not just a clear violation of constitutional rights but contrary to democratic ideals and a blatant attempt at silencing political dissent and suppressing the working-class mass movement for a free Palestine.

We celebrate the release of Mahmoud Khalil and his immediate reunification with his wife, newborn son, and his community.

As the largest socialist organization in the country, we will continue to defend the right to free speech and protest. While today’s ruling is a win against the increasing authoritarianism of the Trump administration, DSA will continue to fight against the detention of immigrants and political prisoners taking place all over the country. We will continue our work to dismantle the institutions that uphold and enable oppression both here and abroad, to build a world where all of us are free.
