Get Involved with DSA

Joining DSA is the best way to fight for democratic socialism and get involved in building working class power in the United States. As a member-based and member-led organization, we are organizing against the evils of capitalism all across the country for the better world we know is possible.

Want to learn more before officially joining? Sign up for updates and check out recent DSA campaign reflections at our online magazine, Democratic Left. Once you join, check out below how to get involved with DSA in your local or at the national level – from campaigns to working groups and other ongoing projects.

Get involved in your local chapter.

The majority of DSA’s work happens at the chapter level, and that’s where we recommend that new organizers get started. Find the chapter nearest to you! DSA chapters organize campaigns to transform their communities and spread our political ideas in communities across the country. Chapters take on diverse work that speaks to their local conditions: your local chapter might be running an electoral campaign, a tenant organizing program, labor solidarity actions, ongoing mutual aid work, and more, as well as political education programs and socials. If you’re a student, check out the list of Young Democratic Socialists of America chapters. If you don’t have a chapter near you, you can start one or you can get involved with one of our national committees (see below)!

Get involved with campaigns and other work of national priorities.

  • DSA National Labor Commission
    • Our NLC is a body of DSA members active in the labor movement, including union members and stewards, union staff, worker center activists, union officers, labor journalists, union retirees, students in labor solidarity groups, and labor-oriented intellectuals. Join to connect with other DSA members in your union, learn how to connect your chapter to local labor work, learn about taking on work in strategic industries, or learn how to organize your workplace.
  • Green New Deal
    • Our ecosocialism-focused GNDCC supports chapters in developing campaigns to build green projects and expand universal public services, from public power to mass transit to a just transition from fossil fuels to green energy, as well as helping to guide our national fight for a green future against the capitalism-driven climate crisis!
  • National Electoral Commission
    • The NEC houses our coordinated electoral work: training chapters to run electoral campaigns and ballot measures, training candidates to run for office, providing resources about electoral communications, promoting and supporting the campaigns of nationally endorsed candidates, and more. Our voting rights and protection work is also housed within the NEC.
  • Housing Justice Commission
    • As socialists, we believe that housing is a human right, and our HJC works to develop the fight for social housing everywhere and supports the growth of local tenant organizing through ETOC (the Emergency Tenant Organizing Committee).
  • International Committee
    • The fight for anti-imperialism is core to our fight for socialism in the heart of the empire. DSA’s International Committee supports the fight for anti-imperialism at home (including Palestine solidarity work and demanding normalization of relations with Cuba), houses our anti-war and migrants’ rights work, develops internationalist political education, and interfaces with left parties around the world to share lessons and learn from each other’s practice as socialists.
  • Trans Rights & Bodily Autonomy
    • DSA’s Trans Rights & Bodily Autonomy Campaign Commission is the largest hub for grassroots trans rights organizing in America. In a political climate characterized by fear and isolation, we bring courage to our democratic socialist convictions.

Participate in other working groups.

DSA’s national working groups, committees, and other organizing bodies are based on issues of particular political interests, organizing topics, or identities. These help link DSA to critical social movements and provide an important mechanism through which DSA members can organize at the national or chapter level.

Participate in national work committees.

Members with particular skills can also contribute to national DSA work committees around specific areas of organizational support, including:

Attend online, national and regional events.

Beyond our foundation of local organizing, we also have regional gatherings, a biannual convention and offer up a variety of national, online-based calls that you can join from anywhere on a number of topics.

Learn about upcoming events on our calendar.

Share DSA content with others!

Many people share our values, but don’t know there is a name for the ideas. Others already consider themselves democratic socialists or anti-capitalist but haven’t heard of DSA. You can play a critical role by visibly representing DSA and talking to friends, family, neighbors, coalition partners and others. If you share a flyer, blog post, copy of Democratic Left or other DSA literature, they may thank you for letting them know about DSA. Downloadable flyers and web versions can be found in our resources section and articles from our three blogs on the DSA homepage.

Understanding DSA Structure

DSA is democratic from top to bottom. Find the best place to get involved.

Pay Dues and/or make additional financial contributions.

DSA is entirely member-funded. This means we are accountable to members and NOT big donors. This comes primarily through member dues, and occasionally through dedicated fundraising drives for special projects. In our highly capitalistic country, we appreciate every dollar from memberships, special fundraising, or bequests. We especially appreciate members who build a solid foundation for DSA by making a regular monthly contribution.
