  • Englewood Arts Presents

2:00pm. Englewood Arts Presents: AMERICAN MEDLEY ~ JOE & PENNY SHOEMAKER MEMORIAL ENGLEWOOD ARTS PRESENTS opens its 2013-14 Chamber Music Of The Masters series on Saturday, October 5, 2013. This 12th concert season will continue to showcase Colorado Symphony musicians and other area professional musicians in performances of smaller ensemble chamber music repertoire in the warmth and intimacy of Hampden Hall at the Englewood Civic Center. The opening concert will be a benefit for the UP CLOSE AND MUSICAL (UCAM) ensemble, a local non-profit that raises funds to provide free concerts to local area elementary school children. It was founded by and continues to be under the leadership of Eric Bertoluzzi. Performers are primarily musicians from the Colorado Symphony Orchestra (CSO). Eric, a 40+ year member of the CSO until his retirement earlier this year, continues to be passionate about bringing the joy of music to the many children throughout the Denver area who may not otherwise enjoy such an opportunity. This opening concert will also be performed in honor and memory of Penny and Joe Shoemaker. Penny and Joe were co-founders of the Helen Marie Black Music Education Fund, dedicated to engaging young people throughout the Metro Denver area in the world of music, both performance and education. HMBMEF provided annual financial support to UCAM for well over a decade until Penny’s passing, at which time its endowment was transferred to UCAM to allow its mission to continue and expand. The program will include Aaron Copland’s ‘Appalachian Spring’ (chamber version) performed by the UCAM ensemble under the direction of Eric Bertoluzzi. Also on the program will be George Gershwin’s ‘Rhapsody in Blue’ performed by the Shoemakers’ son, pianist Jeff Shoemaker.
