Trumka Says Shutting Down the Government to Prove a Point is a 'Temper Tantrum Worthy of a 4-Year-Old'

9/30/2013
Jackie Tortora

A looming federal government shutdown is slated to take effect at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday. AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka released the following statement on the House Republicans’ hostage taking:

As of today, it is clear that the Republican Party and the Tea Party have become one and the same when it comes to federal fiscal policy. House Republicans have decided that they will shut down critical public services, stiff public servants, hold America’s credit rating hostage and kill off jobs because they are upset that President Obama decisively defeated Mitt Romney last November. That some Republicans are participating in this fiasco against their better judgment does not obscure their responsibility. All responsible voices must speak and act against policy making by hostage taking.

Colorado Floods - Contribute to Weld County School District 6

Editor’s note: The following announcement is from John Evans Middle School in Greeley, CO, which is just one of many Northern Colorado schools and school districts affected by last week’s floods.

Our hearts go out to our many families who have lost their homes and their possessions. We are so thankful that no lives were lost in this horrific tragedy.

We are continuing to work with our students who have displaced by the flood, getting them to school, providing uniforms and other clothing, providing counseling services and a return to as normal a routine as possible. We are so happy to have you all back in school!

Many of you have generously called and offered help. We are very grateful to so many in the community who have rallied to assist displaced families. If you want to help our students directly, we are accepting donations of new socks, shoes and underwear – for children ages 4-18 – at our Welcome Center in the Administration Building, 1025 9th Avenue. These will be distributed to our students immediately.

We can also accept cash donations, either at the Welcome Center or through any of the school or District 6 website. This money will be used to buy clothing, especially uniforms, and supplies for our displaced students. We also urge you to support the many agencies that are assisting with the effort to help homeless families.

Many churches and organizations have been collecting other items. The Weld County Food Bank is collecting food for the flood victims, many of whom have students in District 6. And, of course, the United Way of Weld County is offering many services to flood victims. The Community Foundation Serving Greeley and Weld County is also collecting donations earmarked for flood victims.

If you know someone who needs services, the best way to help is to refer them to the 2-1-1 line operated through United Way. They will help direct residents to the services they need. Also, if you would like to volunteer to help, call the same 2-1-1 number and they will direct you to the agencies that need you most. Again, thank you all for your generous support of our schools. We are ready to get back to the task of educating your children, which we do every day with great joy!

Ludlow Massacre Centennial Commemoration Events Under Way

9/23/2013 Mike Hall AFL-CIO

One hundred years ago on Sunday, southern Colorado miners and their families walked out of the coal mines and mining camps striking for adequate wages, enforcement of state mining laws and union recognition. The strike led to a months-long struggle that culminated in one of the most tragic events in U.S. labor history, the April 20, 1914, Ludlow Massacre.

Yesterday, at the Ludlow Massacre memorial site near Trinidad, several hundred survivors’ descendants, Mine Workers (UMWA) members and officials, historians and others kicked off the centennial commemoration of the strike and massacre.

Upon striking, the miners and their families were evicted from their company-owned houses and the UMWA bought land and tents so that a series of tent colonies could be established throughout the area. Rising tensions throughout the winter finally exploded into the southern Colorado mine wars.

A brass ensemble of the Denver Municipal Band performed for this historic occasion. A special thanks go to the United Mine Workers, the Denver Municipal Band and the Colorado Chamber Orchestra for making this performance possible.

Englewood Arts Presents: A New Mini-Series! Date: Saturday, October 19, 2013 Time: 2:00 PM Venue: Hampden Hall (located on the 2nd level of the Englewood Civic Center)* Englewood Arts Presents announces the appointment of Silver Ainomäe, CSO's principal cellist, as its new Artistic Director. Silver will create a "mini-series" within the Chamber Music of the Masters Series, programing four of the eight concerts during the 2013-2014 season. He shares some thoughts on his upcoming programs: “The four concerts I have created for the Englewood Arts Presents’ 2013-2014 season include several ‘big hits’ from the classical chamber music repertoire. My goal is to present a wide variety of composers and also have ensembles of all varying sizes. The mini-series opens on October 19, 2013. The first program includes the Debussy Cello Sonata, Arvo Pärt’s ‘Mozart-Adagio,’ a one-movement quartet (Quartett-Satz D 703) by Schubert, and Brahms' Piano Quintet. Once again I will have the pleasure to perform together with CSO concertmaster Yumi Hwang-Williams and pianist Hsing-ay Hsu. The group size will expand through the program when we will share the stage with Stirling Trent (violin) and Anne Ainomäe (viola). Our second concert on January 18, 2014, will highlight the music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Three quintets will definitely have something for everyone! The string quintet adds an additional viola (!) to a string quartet. The horn quintet will feature the CSO's latest addition to the horn section, Kolio Plachkov. And last but not least will be one of Mozart's greatest chamber music works, the clarinet quintet, showcasing the CSO's fabulous new principal clarinetist, Jason Shafer. On February 15, the third program includes masterpieces by German composers Erwin Schulhoff (String Sextet) and Richard Strauss (Capriccio and Metamorphosen). The concert begins with six players and ends with seven. The septet version of the Strauss' Metamorphosen will nearly achieve the sound of a chamber orchestra; however each musician will have their own solo part. I guarantee this program will touch the soul of every classical music fan. Finally, in the fourth concert we conclude the chamber music journey with the great Franz Schubert's Octet. Colorado Symphony principals, led by concertmaster Yumi Hwang-Williams, will come together to perform this giant composition on April 26th.” Website: www.englewoodarts.org Facebook: Englewood Arts Concert Series Phone: 303.806.8196 Tickets are General Admission: $15.00 Adults | $12.00 (60+) | FREE (under 18) Available at www.englewoodarts.org or at the door beginning ½-hour prior to concert time. * Location: Hampden Hall Englewood Civic Center | 2nd level 1000 Englewood Parkway (Hampden & S.
