I play the cello. Other than one year of violin when I was 11 I did not play a string instrument until I was over 50.
I think of myself as a beginner. I am most comfortable in first position, but I am learning some pieces on thumb position. I take lessons about once a month during the school year. I am currently struggling with the chords in the Sarabande movement of the first Bach Suite for Unaccompanied Cello.
I currently play in the Fort Collins Mostly Older Beginners (MOB) String Orchestra. My first ensemble experience was playing simple, short pieces with a beginning violin player, then I played regularly in an informal piano trio (where we loved playing several of the Haydn Piano Trios). Now, in addition to MOB I play often with a piano playing friend (currently Hindemith's Three Easy Pieces and Beethoven's Variations on Theme from Handel's J. Maccabaus), and I also play regularly with one of the cello players from MOB (a Dotzauer duet, Rhondo by Neubauer and MOB practice).
Nothing is uppermost in my mind right now.
Starting in September I expect to be able to attend monthly.
I learned to play the cello (after age 50) with the idea of playing music with other people. It's what I most enjoy and is what motivates me to improve. I love listening to a wide variety of music, from blues and jazz to modern classical.
