Matthew began his music studies with piano at the age of six. Later, he became involved in his school’s orchestra program playing violin. He went on to pursue a Bachelor of Music degree with an emphasis in bass and piano. After his bachelors, he continued his studies at the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and received a Master of Music degree from that school.
During his time at Cincinnati, Matthew built an instrument as part of an independent study and fell in love with the process. He decided to change the focus of his career and moved to Salt Lake City in order to attend the Violin Making School of America. After finishing the violin making program and working for a shop in Salt Lake, he accepted a position at Pasewicz String Instrument Company doing instrument restoration.
After working for Pasewicz for a number of years, Matthew moved to his hometown of Grand Rapids, Michigan and opened Grand Rapids Violins, LLC. He and his business partner Kevin are garnering a reputation for quality work and serving the needs of musicians in West Michigan and the greater Midwest area.
Matthew is still active in the music community as a cellist and pianist. When not in the shop, he enjoys spending time with his wife and daughter.
