Inspired by Greeley cellist, Gal Faganel's (professor at UNC) hike to the summit of Long's Peak last year, the Project hiked to the summit of Mt. Sherman with 11 cellists (and cellos) on June 21, 2014. The group met at 3:30am to drive to the trailhead and started the hike around 7am, with the concert starting around 10:30am at the summit of Mt. Sherman.
The founder of the Boulder Cello Project is moving to Oregon and wanted to organize a special event to be remembered, which will be submitted to the Guinness World Records for the most cellists on top of a 14er at one time.
"We want to inspire people to learn how to play an instrument and incorporate it into their lifestyles. Hiking a 14er and playing at the summit? Sure! Why not?! Traveling down a river in a raft while playing a cello? Yes! One of our members (Molly) does that every summer!
We want to show others how versatile our instruments can be; that is, it can play a wide variety of songs and can be played in unlikely places. Obviously cellos are not as compact and easy to carry as violins, but cellos are quickly gaining popularity with its sweet beautiful sound" the Founder of BCP stated.

A huge success, this event could not have been possible without BCP member, Abram Herman, who led this "expedition" up Mt. Sherman. Their fearless leader not only hiked up the 14er - but ported supplies, ran back and forth to make sure everything was okay - and all with tonsillitis!
Many thanks were given to the volunteers who helped carry supplies and offered encouragement to the hikers. Participants were also touched by the many random hikers who cheered them on through some of the more difficult terrain and the 50+ audience members who watched the performance at the summit.
THE PERFECT HIKE!
14,036 ft altitude (and attitude!) + a group of amazing hiking players from the Boulder Cello Project + wonderful weather + friends and family of the group who helped at every step along the way + random hikers on the trail who cheered them on + summer solstice = a fantastic day on Mt. Sherman!
