Online Registration Issues:
At each summer’s institute, we offer to attending families the opportunity to reserves a musical spot for themselves for the next summer by placing a deposit that is applied to the tuition for the next summer.
This reserves a musical place and offers early registration beginning on January 25, 2015.
For all others, registration opens online on February 1.
You may make special requests in the Notes section on the application form. Many factors go into scheduling, including ages, playing levels, teacher availability, and room availability. We never compromise on creating the perfect schedule for each individual student. If it works out to honor your request, we will do so.
As part of our core curriculum, all of our students participate in musicianship/theory/improvisation classes. We are committed to providing a musical education not only for playing their instrument but also for understanding the fundamentals of music theory leading to music composition skills.
A students’ theory knowledge has nothing to do with where they are studying in the Suzuki repertoire and is also not necessarily related to their reading/ensemble skills. Our goal with the musicianship classes is to move students towards having sound skills to compose music and of course to use their theory skills to become stronger readers and performers.
This opportunity to play string quartets and string chamber music replaces the one enrichment course option included with each student tuition and requires an additional fee. Please read about Chamber Music at the bottom of our Enrichment options page for more information. This class is appropriate for players who have had some orchestra ensemble experience and who are able to begin the challenges of one player on a part ensemble work.
Students receive their assigned ensemble music in mid May and are expected to have prepared the music to a rehearsal-ready level by the beginning of Institute. Applicants must fill out the chamber ensembles audition form of a polished solo with the student application so that we can place students in appropriate ensembles. No tapes for chamber music string ensemble are accepted after April 1st.

Sometimes it is possible. Please email or phone to verify that space is available musically in the session you want. Don’t forget to tell us what instrument you play when you make this inquiry! You may want to check availability of both musical spot AND lodging before confirming your decision to change sessions.
If we do have space and you opt to change sessions, there is a fee of $25 per registrant to change sessions.
Student tuition includes 4 -5 daily classes:
- a shared individual lesson (master class)
- a large group class (repertoire performance class)
- a note reading or improvisation class
- one enrichment class.
Depending upon the playing and reading level of the student, some students are also assigned to an ensemble, such as orchestra, flute, guitar, or piano ensemble. This is in addition to their core curriculum classes. There is NO additional fee for these ensembles.
Pianists registering at the level of Suzuki book 2 and beyond receive a list of music to prepare in advance and consult with their private teacher before returning the teacher-signed piano ensemble form.
Students playing in mid Book 3 and beyond who play violin, viola, flute, or guitar are automatically placed into ensembles. The orchestra, flute, and guitar ensemble music is not available before the first rehearsal.
Piano ensemble class is the opportunity to play and perform piano duets with other Suzuki piano students who read at similar levels. Because all students learn to read at individual levels we ask the input of the student’s own hometown teacher so that the piano ensemble is appropriate.
For all students Book 2 and beyond, a piano duet form is also required, in addition to the Institute registration, in order to participate in this class. Once this form is received, you receive a confirmation with the link to send to the home piano teacher on which he/she selects the appropriate level. The student then purchases the music indicated on the form and prepares it before coming to Beaver Creek. There is no additional fee for this class. However, Piano Duet Forms must be submitted before April 1st.
We have several levels of orchestra and students are assigned according to Suzuki book level and experience. We begin by filling the highest level orchestra with the most advanced players. Next we fill the next highest orchestra class and continue until the beginning level orchestra is filled. There is no way to tell where the lowest cut off will be until the registration is complete and then the scheduling is complete.
Historically, the beginning level orchestra frequently includes violin students in the middle of book 3 and viola and cello students in the beginning of book 3. If a student has not had any reading experience with their home teacher yet, we don’t place them into orchestra, regardless of their book level.
Tuition is due in full at the time of registration. We accept Visa or MasterCard.
Who can I register to attend Institute?
This curriculum is open to students studying violin, viola, cello, double bass, piano, flute, or guitar with a Suzuki trained teacher, using the Suzuki Method. Non-Suzuki siblings/parents can enroll in enrichment classes on a space available basis. Fill out a student application form indicating “sibling” or “parent” on the instrument line. Siblings may register for up to 3 enrichment classes.
Ask your home teacher to make an educated judgment about your child’s study and to tell us if he/she thinks your child will be beyond the twinkles by June. The teacher’s input is what is needed. If your home teacher anticipates that your child will be playing all of the twinkle variations without assistance by June, then registration into our regular Suzuki program is possible. Our goal is to support the home teacher in that teacher’s plan for your child.
We have many adults registered into the student program. You use the student application form. You will be placed into the classes that are appropriate for your playing level, usually with other ‘older’ students. If you want to take instrument instruction, register as a student; if you only want to take an enrichment class, register as a ‘sibling/parent’. Go for it!
Both sessions have beginning level and advanced level students. There does not seem to be a trend as to which session has more advanced students. The two sessions have the same faculty, same fees, and same curriculum. The only difference is which session suits your family schedule.
The Chamber Music of the Rockies program is for advanced level string students who want to play chamber music and have lessons. Chamber Music of the Rockies (CROC) is a wonderful opportunity for teenage musicians to begin understanding the process of independent learning of musical material as well as team work, accountability, responsibility and self confidence and pride in one’s work ethic.
This program does not have Suzuki repertoire class, musicianship, or orchestra, classes like the Colorado Suzuki Institute has. Some students would qualify for the Chamber Music of the Rockies program but due to calendar issues cannot be here for the full program dates. Those students participate in one of the sessions of the Colorado Suzuki Institute and may opt to take chamber ensemble instead of an enrichment class so that they can play in a chamber ensemble and be coached daily.
We have very advanced and older students in each session of the Colorado Suzuki Institute. We have had students who participated in Chamber Music of the Rockies program in the past, but choose to participate in the Suzuki Institute the current year due to family schedules.

Planning logistics (travel, preparation, etc.)
All students age 12 and under must be accompanied by a parent or responsible, interested adult. The parent attends classes with their student and takes notes for the student. Parents to not need to attend enrichment classes or orchestra class but are welcome to attend and observe if they wish.
Student schedules are given out during registration on the Monday of each session. We are committed to creating the perfect schedule individualized for each student matching him or her with appropriate teachers and peers in each of their classes.
The faculty is given an opportunity to review the schedules to verify the appropriateness of each assignment, and therefore, schedules are available only after 12:00pm (noon) on the Monday of each session.
First and foremost, consult with your home teacher! Students should bring a polished piece from the Suzuki repertoire for the master class. No matter what the level of current study, the student should select a piece from the Suzuki repertoire that has been studied over a period of time. Master class teachers will not work on a new piece with students as we support and want to ensure that the home teacher creates proper preparation for newer pieces.
Since we are a Suzuki program, we place a strong emphasis on the Suzuki repertoire. However, as students playing at Suzuki book level 6 and beyond, it is common for students to study repertoire that is supplementary to the Suzuki books.
Beyond approximately books 6 for piano, flute, and guitar or approximately books 7 for violin, viola, and cello, non-Suzuki repertoire is occasionally chosen for solo honors recitals.
All pianists performing need to have a polished Suzuki repertoire piece prepared to perform.

Pianists may choose to wear other appropriate concert clothing.
Be sure your hair is secured so that your vision is not obstructed.
Please consider your audience when choosing your attire.
Bare midriffs or shoulders, short skirts or plunging necklines are not appropriate.
Be sure to bring:
- a notebook for taking notes during classes and parent-talks
- All of your Suzuki books
- a music stand (unless you’re a pianist),
- your Suzuki recordings.
Be aware that most of the lodging facilities in Beaver Creek have luxurious swimming pools – be prepared for a wonderful time!
You do not need a car while you are in Beaver Creek in order to fully participate in Institute. All classes are in walking distance of each other and there is also a complimentary shuttle service (on call and door-to-door) throughout Beaver Creek.
However, there are also rental cars available through Enterprise in Avon should guests wish to rent a car for part or all of their stay.
Lodging and Meals:
We only have enough adult supervision for the teens staying in the teen lodge. This is why Institute sponsored teen activities are only open to teens housed in the teen lodge.
However, only about 20 teens each session stay in the teen lodge, out of the more than 150 teens who enroll in each session. Your son/daughter will have many other teens to be with under your supervision.
We coordinate lodging with families all the time. Frequently, the family will attend for one session with a younger sibling and keep the teen in the family lodging with them. Then the family goes home and the teen moves into the teen lodge. Of course the other way, where the teen is in the teen lodge for session 1 and the family comes for session 2 works fine too. Whatever suits your schedule, we just need to know well in advance so we can save a space for the teen in the teen lodge and coordinate the move.
The Colorado Suzuki Institute provides roommate matching as a courtesy to our participants. We will try to accommodate your request, but we cannot guarantee you a roommate. The CSI is not responsible for any alterations in plans or cancellations by roommates, and the CSI will not pay the difference in your fees if your roommate does not show up.
There are a number of restaurants ranging from family-friendly pizzerias to fine dining located in Beaver Creek. There is also a large grocery store in near-by Avon, which is 1.5 miles from the plaza area of Beaver Creek and reachable by the village shuttle services.
What to expect when you’re in Beaver Creek during Institute:
There will be a front desk located in the upper level of the Vilar Center for the Performing Arts in Beaver Creek. There is also a village information booth located near the ice-skating rink for more information about recreational activities and dining in Beaver Creek and the surrounding Vail Valley area.
Instrumentalists other than pianists practice in their own lodging room or outside in the beauty of the Rocky Mountains.
We do provide practice rooms for pianists, who may sign up for 30-minutes of reserved practice time each day. For piano practice room reservation be sure to show up on the early side of registration on the Monday of each session. Piano practice room sign up is on a first-come-first-served basis.
Piano practice room reservation signup sheets are only available between 12:00-2:00pm during registration on the Monday of each session.

There are multiple activities planned for the evenings that are wonderful opportunities for Suzuki families from around the world to get to know each other and enjoy making music and making wonderful memories that continue to motivate both students and parents throughout the year. These are fun and family oriented for everyone to enjoy.
In addition to the regular class schedule, all students perform in the celebration concerts which last until 8:30pm on the Saturday of each session. Concerts are divided into instrument groups as well as orchestra performances. Detailed information about the time and location of each Celebration Concert will be publicized in the Daily Note newsletter at Institute.
Guests can catch the bus from the Covered Bridge to the lower parking lots (by Highway 6) and then catch another bus to Vail. Cost is ~$5 one way. There are also rental cars available in Avon, should guests wish to rent a car for the day.
If you only need childcare assistance for a short time each day we suggest that you post a help wanted note on the bulletin board in the Vilar Center Lobby to find a Suzuki teen to assist you. Many families bring older siblings along and some post their names on the bulletin board making themselves available for families.
Another option is to contact : SMALL WORLD PLAY SCHOOL – Small World Play School TM offers quality childcare for ages 2 months-5 years to guests of Beaver Creek Resort. Individual infant, toddler and pre-school age programs. High staff to child ratios. Camp-type activities for ages 2-5 years including arts & crafts and outside play. Lunch and snacks provided. Please bring specialty food and formula for infants. Open 8:30 am-4:30 pm, Monday-Friday. Reservations highly recommended (required for ages 2-15 months).

What if I have to cancel?
In the event that you decide to cancel your registration, notify the Colorado Suzuki Institute in writing. There is a $100 non-refundable cancellation fee per participant. The payment of all other fees will be returned if written notice of cancellation is received by April 1, 2015.
Due to commitments to faculty and travel plans, applicants who withdraw after April 15, 2015 forfeit all fees. If enrollment is full or a teacher-training course is canceled, all registration and course fees will be refunded.
Your lodging deposit and cancellation policies will be quoted to you at the time of booking as individual properties have different policies.
