2016 Voice Program fellow, soprano Alexandra Smither, shares her Music Academy of the West Summer Program experience below.

2017 OPERA PRODUCTION: DONIZETTI'S THE ELIXIR OF LOVE

sung in Italian with English supertitles

All voice types are welcome to apply.

In addition to the opera production, each Voice Program fellow will be provided with performance opportunities throughout the program, including:

  • A selection of opera scenes, conducted by Voice Program faculty and accompanied by Vocal Piano fellows.
  • Vocal chamber music with Matthew Aucoin
  • Orchestral vocal project with Matthew Aucoin
  • Public masterclasses
  • The opportunity to compete in the prestigious Marilyn Horne Song Competition

In addition to performing, each Voice Program fellow receives private weekly lessons from members of the faculty, including Marilyn Horne, instruction from faculty during weekly masterclasses, and individual coaching in German, French, and Italian diction

 

Summer 2017 Applicants

PRE-SCREENING RECORDING ROUND
The following two selections must be uploaded as audio or audio/video files within the online application:

  • 1 opera aria
  • 1 art song

*Applicants will be notified by November 1 if they have advanced to the live  round.


INVITATION-ONLY LIVE AUDITION ROUND
The following four selections:

  • 2 contrasting opera arias
  • 2 art songs, one of which must be in English

*Singers must demonstrate in their audition a thorough understanding of the character, dramatic situation, and meaning of each aria or song text.

*Singers not cast in the opera will enjoy other significant performance opportunities.  Those cast as opera covers will perform a sing-through of the opera, for a public audience in the Academy's recital hall.
