One of the Standard Modern Method Books

I can't believe this etude book hasn't been reviewed yet. It is one of the best modern methods for the student who has completed an early method like Dotzauer or Schroeder and is ready to begin shifting. Rick Mooney has done an excellent job preparing an orientation to each position, with homework exercises for naming notes and learning the fingerboard. There are tonalization warmups for each position: the one for second position is perhaps the best single exercise I know for playing more perfectly in tune. That page alone justifies the price of the book. For each position (up to 4th), there are a variety of appealing short etudes with teacher's duet part. The student will learn new keys, rhythms, and techniques as she goes along. Highly recommended for the Suzuki book 2-3 player.

highly recommend!

This book is excellent! It is an invaluable collection of beautiful arrangements that is both fun to play and forces students to play with proper left hand position. I have been teaching for 18 years and this book is required for all of my Suzuki Book 2 students. The pieces are leveled so a Book 2 student can start very comfortably at the beginning and move along fairly quickly for the first several pieces to get the basics of double stops down. By the end of the book the pieces are more advanced, so it's a book that can grow with the students for a long time. I very highly recommend it!

I prefer this note reading course for a number of reasons: -Like many courses, the introduction to notes is gradual and repetitive before going on to new material. -The note patterns are not familiar melodies which can easily be learned by rote. An occasional recognizable series of notes ends unpredictably. The student has to actually read notes. -The learning of note locations is separate from rhythm. One page is notes which are in a regular quarter note pattern so the student can concentrate on just notes. The facing page is all on one open string so the student can concentrate on just counting rhythms. (Eventually they get put together.) -I like the spiral binding so the book lies flat on the music stand. -Note size is easy for young readers -The material on one page is reasonable for one session but long enough that it is not easy to memorize the lines. -It is satisfying for a student to finish each prominently numbered page and see visible progress by tracking pages completed.

Using Correct Version on the CD

Someone gave a review of this CD stating that you could barely hear the cello. There are two versions of each piece. The one labeled accompaniment is to be used after the student has learned the piece. The cello part is reduced in volume to emphasize the piano part.

Decent Recording

I am writing to give some input on the other review. This CD is a good quality CD with a reputable cellist playing. The reason the piano sounds too loud is that the second half of the CD is meant to be played along with at home. The first half of the CD, the cello and piano are properly balanced. I think the CD is good quality. My only complaint is that the cellist is inclined towards very fast tempos, which are unrealistic for students.

Great Revision

There are varying opinions on the revised Suzuki books and CDs. As someone who grew up on Suzuki and have now reached book five, I think the revisions are a good improvement. I like the added exercises and helps plus a couple new pieces. Having grown up on Suzuki, I think it's a great way to learn an instrument. Now that I've reached book five I have really begun to appreciate the great selection of pieces that Suzuki uses, too. Highly recommended!

Very disappointed

The piano accom. is so loud that it practically drowns out the cellist. Given that the point of Suzuki is to listen, this recording doesn't really facilitate that.

Q. Are these books really ok for a 5 year old with no experience on piano (tho both her parents are professional musicians)? What songs are included in each book? I am looking for familiar tunes in order to keep her interest. Thanks.

A. Hello Sharon, thank you for your question. Please note that the item CDP 1 is only the audio-CD for the Suzuki Piano School Book 1. However, referring to the Suzuki Piano School Book 1 - the pieces presented are certainly for beginners of any age, and have been used with children as young as 3 years old. They are meant to be taught by a Suzuki-trained teacher with knowledge of the method, though the pieces included could also simply be used as a collection of beginner repertoire.
