Don't hold their tune
I usually use Visions on this violin. I thought I'd try these strings. Once strings settle, they usually hold their tune really well on this instrument, whether it's between use or during play. In either case, after several weeks with these stings, I can say they don't hold their tune well. The sound is okay, although not as good as with Visions. The E string is rather shrill, which is unpleasant, as people usually comment how sweet the E string is on this instrument. Have to play a wedding in two weeks and finally decided I can't have such an unreliable set on the instrument.

Jargar Viola Ball-End A String

LOVE this string!
I loved this string from the second I put it on my viola. The smaller diameter is more pliable and notes on the A string were overall much easier to play than with my old A string. Tone is clear and beautiful. Can't like this string enough!

Evah Pirazzi Gold Viola String Set

Great A String as Well!
I have been using these strings on my violas for a couple of years now with my usual A string by another maker. I decided to try the Eva Pirazzi Gold A string that comes with this set. I like it very much. It is a steel core A string like I am used to, but it has a rounder less harsh tone. For me it's a real improvement. By the way shipping on my order was amazingly fast! I suspect relativistic travel!

Soft and Dark
A violinist never uses steel strings but a fiddler does. As a fiddler for over 40 years I have played on wonderful violins and have tried many different style strings. Jargar are one style that I would not recommend unless you have an extremely brightly toned instrument. They respond as if you have mute on your bridge. I would return to perlon strings before using Jargar but instead I am back to Prims.

Evah Pirazzi Gold Viola String Set

Warm C, Even Top To Bottom
I have been playing viola for about 2 years. My viola came with a Larsen A, Evah Pirazzi D & G, and a Spirocore Tungsten C. I changed strings about 6 weeks ago to a full set of Evah Golds. When my teacher played it they sounded very warm and even from string to string. Now that I've been playing on them, the C is definitely warmer and more responsive than the Spirocore which I thought was a little clunky sounding. The G especially gives me a beautiful warm sound as well as the D. The A compares well with the Larsen but I would still like an even warmer sound there. But maybe that's just my playing. As I progress my tone there may get better. These strings took a few days to stretch out and settle in but still settle a lot faster than classical guitar strings do. Overall, I am very satisfied with them.

Very nice, very pleased.
When I upgraded my violin about a year ago it came with Dominants on it. I was pretty excited because my teacher had them. I loved the G and D strings! They have a very full, mellow tone. However, I was disappointed with the A and E strings. I thought the A was somewhat nasally and the E was a bit weak with a slight shrillness. I began searching for a different brand. I came across the Corellis and read lots of reviews. They appeared to be just what I was looking for. I ordered a set. I am very pleased with them! The G and D are very good, unfortunately not as nice as Dominants. The A and E are quite satisfactory. The A matches the D well, and the E is vibrant without any tininess or harshness.

D'Addario Kaplan Amo - violin
I love these strings! I've used Pirastro for years but I'm always testing other strings. For years Tonica were my mainstay and I would splurge for Obligato for recordings. I tried the Evah pirrazi but they were too bright for my violin. Larsen Tzigane were my latest experiment and though I loved the tone, they didn't seem to last very long. Kaplan Amo seem to have all the warmth of the Tzigane, yet wonderful presence like the Evahs and they stay true longer than most other strings that I've tried! I highly recommend them.

I have a new $2k Chinese violin. It had Dominants and I wasn't too happy with them. I read that Obligatos had a wonderful warming effect on newer violins. Wow! As soon as I put them on I loved the sound! It has been 3 weeks and they sound better every day! They are easy to play on. The tension is low and the response is quick! Great job Pirastro!

A. Hello Maria, that is a good question, but the answer depends on the player and the instrument! Medium gauge is usually deemed by the string-maker as the "optimum" tension for any particular brand of strings. However, occasionally a particular string on an instrument will not speak as clearly or powerfully as the others, or a player will desire a louder, more nuanced response from one or more of their strings, so they will choose one or more string to be thick or "heavy" gauge. (Sometimes a light gauge strings will be chosen for the opposite reason, as well.) The violin E string is very often chosen in a thick gauge, which usually denotes a .27-mm steel string as opposed to a .26-mm steel string. That diameter difference is very small, however has a large effect on the tension produced at pitch, and may cause the other strings to respond differently, be it better or worse. If you are unsure about which E-string you will prefer, I would recommend trying both, as E-strings are at least the least expensive of the strings! It is a very enlightening experience as well! Lastly, always make sure that the soundpost, top, and bridge are in good condition and placement before applying a heavier gauge string or set of strings.
