“The number one goal of teachers should be to help students learn how to learn.” – Randy Pausch

What Students Will Learn:
Students will learn technique, scales, musicality, listening skills, sight-reading skills, improvisation, and performance skills. They will learn effective methods of practice and how to think analytically so they can become self-motivated, independent musicians. They will study music from the Baroque through the Modern eras, and will be given the opportunity to explore musical styles that interest them including classical, jazz, folk, popular, and sacred. They will also learn music theory and music history to help them gain a better understanding of the music they are learning.

“Christen is a great teacher! She has a good sense of humor and makes me feel at ease.  She motivates me to work hard and makes learning fun.” Jessica, 10

Recitals and Competitions:
I give my flute and piano students opportunities to explore music by encouraging them to participate in recitals, ensembles, and competitions. Students will play in recitals through my studio in the spring and winter. They will also have the opportunity to participate in recitals, events and competitions held by the Colorado Flute Association and the National Federation of Music Clubs.

“I have been taking lessons with Christen for over five years. I played flute in elementary school and came back to it as an adult after nearly thirty years simply for the joy of making music and learning new things. Christen is respectful and understanding of my goals. She has met me where I am and is a pleasure to work with. She pushes me where I need to be pushed and works with me on my particular concerns. It has been enjoyable learning to play an instrument as an adult with her patient and humor-filled guidance.” Margaret Divish

Teaching Philosophy and Vision:
I aim to instill a love of music in each student and to help each one reach his or her full potential. Each of my students is a unique individual, and I strive to respect and accommodate their interests, abilities, and needs. Whatever his or her reasons for taking lessons, I will help them to work towards their personal goals and provide opportunities for their involvement in the musical world, whether it be playing in contests, recitals, ensembles, at church, or in the community.

“Thank you so much for being a way cool teacher!! I’ve really enjoyed taking lessons from you!” Kelsey

“Christen has been teaching my son flute for almost two years now, and she has been a wonderful teacher. She is professional, responsible, and very accommodating when we need a schedule change. My son loves to learn flute from her and has made a lot of progress during the past two years.” Andy Yang

Scholarships:
I donate my time to a limited number of students who have extenuating financial circumstances that prevent them from taking music lessons. These scholarship students will receive part to full financial assistance, and must demonstrate a desire to study music and the flute or piano. Contact me if you would like to apply for a scholarship or to help fund scholarships for additional students.

“It is important that students bring a certain ragamuffin, barefoot irreverence to their studies; they are not here to worship what is known, but to question it.” – Jacob Bronowski
