Beethoven Symphony No. 8
Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 1
Beethoven’s eighth symphony is said to be “lighthearted but not lightweight.” Though it is rife with musical jokes and major chords, it nevertheless provides glimpses of the grandeur to come in Beethoven’s next and final work, his famous “Ode to Joy.” In this program its passion and subtlety are perfectly set off by Irish pianist Barry Douglas’ interpretation of the massively popular Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 1, and a new composition inspired by Pikes Peak from Boulder composer Daniel Kellogg.
