Huge improvement
We upgraded my son's violin from a local rental to the Sonata. It is a fantastic little violin - he has a 1/8 size. If your local store tells you there isn't a difference in the smaller fractionals don't believe it. This violin tunes easily, holds it's tune, and sounds amazing.

I love my new violin!
I have been playing the violin for two years. My first year of violin I took with a man who knows the violin, but is not a teacher, and I would go for lessons once a week. My violin playing never got any better, and I hated playing it. My second year I took with a college professor, and my playing skyrocketed! By the end of that year, my old violin was not making the sound I wanted. I bought a used Lamberti Sonata, and noticed an immediate change in the tone. It is far easier to tune and tell whether I am on pitch or not. I am a high school student and paid for the violin myself and think it is well worth the money.

Fantasic violin!
I recently purchased this violin as an upgrade from a Mendini MV500. I was starting to notice things I did not like in the old one like weird buzzing or rattling depending on where I was playing especially when playing higher notes. This violin blows the MV500 out of the water! I got lucky and received one with a 1pc back and it is extremely beautiful. The varnish makes the flaming look like a cool holographic! My tuning pegs did not have the pearl inlays but it has the pegs pictured on the symphony violin that look like spades. Also the tail piece is either plastic or composite. I'm leaning towards plastic. I have only played it for about 4hrs so far but it is getting better by the minute. It is about 1.5 lbs lighter than my previous violin and it is much much louder. The bow it comes with the outfit is amazing. I am very happy with this violin!

CARLO LAMBERTI SONATA 1/8 SIZE VIOLIN
I bought a 1/8 size Carlo Lamberti Sonata violin from Shar as a trade-in. I really didn't want my wife to know I had shelled out several hundred dollars for such a tiny violin! In retrospect, I think this 1/8 size violin is well worth the $500 list price. The violin top is hand-carved. The sound is astonishingly full for such a tiny instrument. There is just as much quality workmanship involved in building this little instrument as there is in building a larger size student violin. Most importantly, our 3 year old granddaughter loves "playing" on this little violin. We own smaller violins whose sound quality really tends to discourage little kids, especially when they hear an older person playing a big violin. This little Carlo Lamberti Sonata is a different story. Our year-and-a-half old grandson is as attracted to this 1/8 size violin as is his 3 year old sister. If I could put a dollar price on motivation, this little violin would be worth every cent I paid for it. I suspect that Leopold Mozart had a small violin of this quality for his son, Wolfgang!

I started to learn to play the violin on an inexpensive model from a music store. After two months I could not stand the tinny sound so I bought the Sonata. I should have done this in the first place. The sound is wonderful! My teacher is also so impressed with the Sonata that she will be recommending it to her students. When she and I play together it now sounds beautiful. Shar is not exaggerating that this is the best $500 violin!

Awesome violin!!
I've had this violin for about a year now and it sounds so rich and beautiful!! There are very small blemishes in the top varnish but are noticed only by close inspection. They are not the first thing you notice at all about this violin. The varnish is pleasingly applied, and this violin's ability to blend in with a group or be heard above other instruments is simply spectacular!! This is a violin for any student who needs an instrument that can let their skill and musical ability shine and flourish. It is perfect for a beginner who can spend a bit more knowing that they will continue playing. My teacher thinks quite highly of this violin. Thanks a million to SHAR for creating a violin that has been so awesome to play and great to advance on!

Reviewed the 4/4 and 1/8 size
I bought the Carlo Lamberti 4/4 after reading a ton of reviews. I love the tone and projection that it has, not to mention the finish is very nice! My daughter just moved up to the 1/8 size and we were able to buy a Carlo Lamberti 1/8 used. My violin has full size Thomastick Vision strings, and this 1/8 came with properly sized Visions as well. The sound and projection out of this little 1/8 was amazing. It doesn't (obviously) have the projection that my full size has, but the tone is rich and full, and my daughter loves the volume. The 1/8 is very much as good quality as the 4/4, and I would highly recommend Carlo Lamberti as a brand. (We have used the Franz Hoffman 1/16 and 1/10 sizes with Shar Overture strings up to this point. They were fine for my kids to start on, and now I think the better tone quality will help at this level of playing. Brand probably would not have made a difference in my kid's ability to play until we got to this size).

Good violin
Before writing a review I wanted to have a decent amount of time with the Sonata. I've had my violin for about 5 months now. The more I play it the more I like it. I haven't been playing that long, but the sound is so much better than the no-name violin I had for the first 3 months of lessons I noticed the difference right away. And I'm not alone, my dog started staying in the same room when I practice, high praise. Again, I'm new and don't really know the proper terminology for describing sound, but here goes my humble attempt. After playing it a short time I noticed when I played a G on the D string the G string starts to resonate along with it, same with the D played on the A string. It gives it a nice rich tone to my inexperienced ear. I picked up my other violin today and it doesn't compare. Originally, when I purchased the Sonata I had planned to upgrade to a better violin as I got better, and have even been saving for one. However, I like the Sonata so much I can't see a need for a more expensive violin in the near future.

Sweet sounding student violin
I bought this for my beginning daughter because I didn't want to go through the grit-your-teeth stage where both the violin and the playing are screechy, thin and annoying. I wanted to avoid struggling with tuning pegs that weren't really made to move, and strings that slipout of tune often as you play. This violin fits her perfectly. The tones are clear and uncomplicated in the way that helps a beginning student learn pitch, but not thin and uninteresting. We all like to hear her practice. I think it's an excellent value as we are sure she will keep with it, and she will be able to keep this for longer than a more basic violin.

I am very impressed with the sound quality of this violin! I just bought a 3/4 size for my grandson, and just loved playing it myself. The sound is deep, rich, refined and more. I have bought 5 different types of violins from Shar, and even though some others were far more expensive, I feel that this one sounds the best of all. No 2 violins will ever sound the same, even though they may be of the same trademark, so maybe I was just lucky with this particular instrument?

Great Violin At A Great Price
We ordered the Carlo Lamberti Sonata Violin (4/4 size). Our daughter is currently in middle school and we wanted something that would grow with her through the remaining years of middle school and through high school. An excellent violin at an absolutely fantastic price! We priced various violins with our local music shops and some stores online but most places wanted double to triple of what Shar Music charged. We could not be happier with our purchase. Our daughter loves her new violin, it is lightweight, beautifully crafted and very comfortable to use (I even tried it out myself and found it very comfortable and natural to hold and play). I would highly recommend the Carlo Lamberti Sonata Violin to everyone who is looking for a great quality product.

The sound is wonderful!
Superficially, the violin is good-looking, strongly figured wood grain, which I like, and a nice thin reddish brown varnish. On my next violin I'll get planetary tuners, but for now, I appreciate having 4 fine tuners. On closer inspection, I have found numerous small careless flaws in the varnish, the carving and the assembly. But the bottom line for me is, IT SOUNDS AWESOME! I still can't get over its gorgeous vibrance and ringing tones. So I'm going to keep it. Maybe in a year or two I'll try out a more expensive model, but my teacher said this instrument sounds almost as good as the $15,000 one she plays. Maybe I got lucky, but I've read other reviews of this model that noted the beautiful way it sounds. For the money, it's a really great deal I believe.

The "hook" for me was that I could trade this instument in for 100% on a step up violin. With that rationalization I plunked my money down. I then steeled myself for dissapointment; it's just the way I am wired. I am so pleased with the sound of this instrument that I don't think I will be trading it off anytime soon! Once the new strings settled the thing began to sing. I'm a novice but I know what I like and I like the timbere of this violin. I came with high quality strings, the fit and finish are pleasing pegs work smoothly and the thing is very pretty. The instrument projects well and when I play my other fiddle I can hear the Sonata vibrating in sympathy. I have a number of other string instruments some which want to be played and some which need to be proded. This instrument is one of the former; it responds like a sensitive and accomplished dance partner. I didn't have to look far to find others who spent a whole lot more and got less. I expected to be disapointed. I am not. Thanks Shar for this "keeper"!

High Quality at a Low Price!
I originally purchased the Sonata model because I couldn't yet afford the more expense Master Art model. I planned on keeping this Sonata until I could save enough cash for the more "advanced" model. However, after playing this violin now for a few months I think I'll hang onto it for a few years or longer. My teacher commented on how good it sounded and has even borrowed it to show a few more of her students who were looking for a quality violing at an affordable price. She suggested that I change the strings to Evah Pirazzi to bring out the fullest potential of the sound. Since I've put Evah Pirazzi strings on my Sonata violin it sounds absolutely amazing! If you are considering buying a more expensive model, I challenge you to put this violin to the test and see if you don't agree that it rivals the pricier models in quality.

My teacher checked it out and said it was even and well-balanced and that I did well in selecting this violin. It has some small smears in the varnish shading, but that is minor. I would have liked more mellow strings than the Vision strings, so I will probably replace them before too long. I've been playing the viola and decided to branch out with violin, too, so this is the instrument I chose to begin my violin studies. Hello, I want to purchase a violin for my grandson to have at school for rehearsals. He will be using his grandfather's violin for performance, lessons, practice at home, and so on, but it is very valuable and we don't want to risk it in the school lockers. On the other hand, now that he has progressed, we don't want a terrible sounding instrument for day to day rehearsal. The Carlo Lamberti Sonata seems fine for the purpose, if the reviews are to be believed, and within reasonable cost. I can't seem to discover on your pages exactly WHAT comes with the violin. A basic case? Strings? Bow? Rosin? He has a good bow, but it would be nice if it comes with a decent bow. If all of these things are only optional, then a $500 investment quickly becomes much more. And, more shopping is in order. I look forward to your reply. K Black
Hi Kathryn, Thank you for your inquiry. It sounds like a great idea to purchase another violin for use at school to protect his grandfather's violin. The Carlo Lamberti Sonata violin should serve your needs quite nicely. It is available as instrument only; it does not come with a case or bow or any other accessories. We do have many case and bow options available; if you're looking to purchase a less expensive bow and case because this is a secondary instrument, we might recommend one of the violin cases from the Toshira line of cases (which vary in price but all of which are currently priced under $65) and one of the Presto carbon fiber bows, such as the Presto Carbon Fiber or Presto Spark or Presto Audition bows. The advantage of using a carbon fiber bow at school is that it is much less likely to break because the material is extremely durable. We do have a wide variety of options, though, and we would be happy to chat over the phone to help you make a decision if you'd like. Please feel free to contact us at 800-248-7427 between the hours of 10 am-6 pm EST and we'd be happy to help. Thanks!

These fractional sizes are not intended to be literal descriptions of relative proportions (ie: a 3/4-sized violin is not three-quarters the length of a full size violin).
Occasionally, an adult with a small frame may use a so-called 7/8 size violin instead of a full-size instrument. Sometimes called a lady's violin, these instruments are slightly shorter than a full size violin, but tend to be high-quality instruments capable of producing a sound that is comparable to that of fine full size violins. The 7/8 size would, in general, be compatible with most of the products and accessories of a full size instrument (ie: a player with 7/8 size could use full sized shoulder rests or strings).
The choice of violin size depends on the age and physical condition of the child, as well as the opinion and preference of the violin teacher. (It’s always a good idea to ask your private teacher, if you have one, for their advice and guidance when choosing an instrument or a size.) The only problem is if the child grows rapidly, the smaller violins may no longer be played. That’s one of the reasons why we offer the SHAR WAY, a rental program that allows parents to build equity, while your child plays different fractional sized instruments, with the option to put it towards a purchase of an instrument later on.
