A CONCERT FOR THE JOSHUA SCHOOL
A concert collaboration with Boulder Cello Project, Chase the Music & Cello Expressions to create a special concert for Chito and his classmates at the Joshua School.
When Boulder Cello Project member, Theresa T., nominated this smart outgoing 13 year old boy with autism for the Chase the Music program, the directors of the collaborating organizations (Clark Hodge, Nick Halsey, Gemma May Varney and Clayton Vaughn) all agreed it would be a wonderful opportunity to create and perform a concert for this wonderful teenager. Chito is partially verbal, but is full of personality and loves to be goofy; and his love for music is quite apparent! His mom taught him how to complete several tasks by teaching them through songs (brushing teeth, learning his phone number, etc.). Because Chito loves Disney, the organizers came up with the idea to arrange three of his favorite Disney songs: Aladdin's A Whole New World, the Little Mermaid's Under the Sea and Toy Story's You've Got a Friend in Me. An original composition was created specifically for Chito, along with other arrangements, which was then performed for his school, family and friends. Not only did the performance have special meaning for Chito and his family, but the concert provided a great learning opportunity for the amateur musicians involved by providing the opportunity to perform for a supportive and appreciative audience while providing autism-awareness! JOSHUA GOMES SCHOLARSHIP FUND
Children with HIV/AIDS can live fulfilling lives, just like any other kid, if they have the right medical care, supportive friends and family - and most of all, hope!
Josh, who was valedictorian of his 1997 high school class, felt strongly about going to college despite the "death sentence" his doctors had given him every year of his life. Learning was one of his core values: to stop learning was to truly die. The thought of college gave him a strong sense of hope for a fulfilling future. But when he began looking for college funding, he found that many scholarships created in tribute to children with hemophilia who died from AIDS often went to those who weren't HIV positive. He believed that action spoke loudly: You may die, so we won't invest. The Joshua Gomes Memorial Scholarship Fund aims to lay a path for hope for young adults like Josh-those with HIV/AIDS-by providing academic scholarships to universities of their choice.
